INSTITUTE LOCATIONColumbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main Street, Columbia, SC

The Joint Arts Administrators Summer Institute will be held July 9, 2015, at the Columbia Museum of Art. The SCDAC is a committee of the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education (SCAAE). The Principals Peer-to-Peer Arts School Network is a committee of the Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Project. Along with the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) and the ABC Project, we are pleased to offer this professional development opportunity for the two groups.

Proposed topics

  1. Read to Succeed: the need for professional development designed specifically to address each arts area so that we can support literacy in and through arts instruction while maintaining the integrity of each art form.
  2. How can Principals and Fine Arts Coordinators Work Together to Strengthen Arts Programs in Their Districts?: brainstorming session to begin exploration and open discussion between principals and fine arts coordinators on how to build stronger relationships and give each group a better understanding of the challenges and obstacles of the other and ultimately how they can support each other to move the arts forward in their districts.
  3. Gifted and Talented Artistic:Discussion of the consequences of the current system where GT Artistic exists as a subset of the Academic Gifted Program and whether we should advocate for it to be added to the purview of the SC Dept. of Education Associate for Visual and Performing Arts.
  4. Fine Arts Coordinator Definition:  Begin work on the development of a definition/job description of a fine arts coordinator.

An arts leader from each district is invited to attend as the designated Fine Arts Coordinators as well as arts school principals or their designee will be funded to attend.   Please see the registration form for information on sending more than one representative from your district or school.
